~ THE STANDARD AMERICAN DIET:
AN UNHEALTHY STATE OF AFFAIRS ~
_____

At the end of December 2001, the U.S. Surgeon General announced
that the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) was soon to overtake
tobacco as the leading cause of death in this country. He declared
this to be a community problem on a national scale and urged all
Americans to improve the quality of their diets.

According to recently released census data, each year
the average American consumes:

- 111 lbs. red meat
- 580 lbs. dairy products
- 29 lbs. ice cream
- 66 lbs. fats and oils
- 150 lbs. wheat (primarily white refined flour)
- 154 lbs. sugar
- 24 gallons coffee
- 53 gallons soft drinks
- 39 gallons alcohol
_____

The average American spends 90% of their food budget on
processed foods of low nutritional value, and also ingests
massive amounts of chemical additives, pesticides, and
growth hormones and antibiotics fed to livestock. The result:
we are now the fattest nation in the world and our overall
health standards have plummeted. Although we ranked number
one in terms of health standards at the turn of the century,
according to the World Health Organization we now rank 12th
out of 13 industrialized nations.

~ TOP 3 QUICK SOLUTIONS ~

~ 1 ~ Reduce amount of processed foods consumed, increase
amount of whole, fresh, natural foods.

~ 2 ~ Reduce soft drink consumption: for every soft drink
or sugar-sweetened beverage a child drinks every day, their
obesity risk jumps 60%, a similar rate applies to adults.
The high-sugar content also dramatically reduces immune
function. (Avoid "diet" drinks as well, artificial sweeteners
have a host of associated problems making them the FDA’s
number one complained about substance.)

~3 ~ Reduce the amount of dairy products consumed. (If you
are concerned about calcium, increase your intake of green
foods. They contain much higher amounts of calcium and in
a more bio-available form. For example, wheat and barley grass
(available in convenient powder form)contain 4-5x more calcium
than milk.)
