~ Getting Back to Basics
~ Top 10 Things to Help Children Eat Healthier
~ Upcoming Class

Hello Everyone,
I am grateful to be back after a short reprieve. In addition to being stirred by the recent world events, I also experienced the recent passing of my mother.

The great blessing of such life altering experiences is that they make us stop and take stock of our lives. We may be befuddled as to how to return to normal, as that doesn't appear to exist anymore. However, we can get back to basics and build a strong personal foundation to sustain us in the days to come.
Making wise food choices is a no-nonsense place to start and the benefits of doing so are tremendous.

Under stress many people turn to what many refer to as "comfort foods" (chocolate, sweets, caffeine, alchohol, fatty foods, etc.). But these foods are really anything but comforting (except to our tastebuds for a fleeting moment!). In fact, they can create a great deal of discomfort in the body and mind, as they are known to cause a host of maladies such as depression, anxiety, foggy thinking, insomnia, headaches, digestive disturbance, joint pain, lowered immune function, etc. Instead, we may choose to nurture our bodies with *real* comfort foods - whole, fresh, natural foods that soothe our nerves and strengthen our immune systems.

Many of us would love to do this, but find it challenging especially when we are under stress. I promised a mother's club that I would send them tips for helping children eat healthier. Whether you have children or not, you can use these suggestions to help yourself eat healthier by applying them to your adult "inner child". Treat yourself as any good mother would treat a child that was feeling out of sorts - feed yourself nourishing foods and comforting words.

~ TOP 10 THINGS TO HELP CHILDREN EAT HEALTHY ~

~ 1 ~ Appeal to their interests by making them aware of the many benefits they will derive from eating healthy (i.e. every child wants to be strong, healthy, fast, smart, etc.).

~ 2 ~ Educate them about what are wise food choices and how to make them, and avoid making sweeping statements such as "that food is *bad* for you", etc..

~ 3 ~ Involve them with food preparation as much as possible, at as early an age as possible.

~ 4 ~ Avoid using food, especially unhealthy food, as a reward or comfort food.

~ 5 ~ Be an example by Eating for Health regularly yourself and ask them to help keep you on track (fair is fair!).

~ 6 ~ Don't keep tempting "junk" food in the house. Do keep plenty of healthy foods and snacks on hand.

~ 7 ~ Make a fun game out of exploring new healthy alternatives to unhealthy habits by taste testing new foods and finding ones that they/you like.

~ 8 ~ Encourage other parents, teachers and family members to make healthy foods available at school and social functions.

~ 9 ~ To increase understanding and body awareness, conduct a fun experiment having them record how they feel before and after eating a generous amount of sugary foods, for example.

~ 10 ~ Pack a bag with nutritious foods when going out, and avoid having to resort to poor quality food choices for the sake of convenience and availability.

Until next time, remember that although we can not control
what goes on around us, we can control how we react to it.
We can take extra care of ourselves and our families in
our own personal sphere of influence, creating an atmosphere
of centeredness and safety, which will in turn radiate out
in a ripple affect and influence the world around us.

A world that is in a balanced state of well-being, begins
with each of us finding a balanced state of well-being
within ourselves.

Be well -
Kel
