~ CANCER: A REALITY CHECK ~
"Seems like everyone has cancer these days..." I have
heard these words uttered by numerous people and they're
almost accurate. Here are some recent statistics
I site in the book I am writing entitled "If It's Not Food, Don't Eat It!"
(avail. Sept 2001) to give you an idea of what's going on
with cancer in our country today:
· One out of every 2.5 people will develop some form of
cancer in their lifetime (that's almost half the population)
· Over the next 5 years, cancer is predicted to surpass
heart disease as the number one cause of death
· 53% of Americans believe that most cancers are the
result of genetic factors
· Only 5-10% of most types of cancer result from genetic
factors
· Since 1973, the overall cancer rate has increased by 40%
· 80 million people do not have health insurance
sufficient to cover the costs of cancer
Preventing cancer is always much better and much less
expensive than treating it. 75% of cancers are associated
with lifestyle factors including diet, smoking, and drinking
alcohol. Of all risk factors DIET is the greatest. More
statistics to consider:
· According to research at Oxford University in England,
70% of all cancer cases are related to diet. (Harvard
estimates it to be 50%.)
· The National Cancer Institute recommends 5 servings per
day of fruits and vegetables, but only 9% of the population,
and only 20% of "gatekeeper" family physicians say they
consume the daily 5 servings.
· 84% of cancer patients do not eat dark green and cruciferous
vegetables, the most recommended food for preventing and fighting
cancer. 82% do not get adequate amounts of fiber.
In brief, cancer is running rampant in this country. It's
important to remember that people don't just suddenly "get"
cancer and only a fraction is due to genetic factors. Cancer
develops in the body over a number of years and what you eat
(or don't eat) is the most significant factor in determining
your risk for the disease. So, start eating those fresh fruits
and vegetables now!
